5 movements to improve diastasis recti (aka ab sep 5 movements to improve diastasis recti (aka ab separation often from pregnancy). 

These target different parts of the abdominal wall and are key when progressively overloading your core to build strength & function! 

There are ways to make rehab fun, I promise! 

Quick tips: 
1) Exhale during the effort of the move. 
2) Never hold your breath. 
3) Practice initiating your exhale slightly before you begin the movement. “Aka blow before you go” as coined by pelvic health guru @juliewiebept ☺️

Have you tried these moves before? If you don’t have a ball, try a pillow.  That said, a mini ball is one of the best pieces of equipment you can ever own! 

If you're just starting your diastasis recti rehab journey (doesn't matter how long ago you gave birth!) you'll want the Pelvic Floor & Core Restore Course.

Hospital birth can look like this. Calm, peaceful, Hospital birth can look like this. Calm, peaceful, and on your own terms. This was at a level 3 hospital in Toronto. I was deemed "high risk" and under the care of an OB. 

Education and self advocating is everything. You have a voice. You must use it. 

A doula is also a huge support (you can hear @lorrifleming guiding my breath in the video). After giving birth, my OB said to my doula in the hallway "thank you for allowing me to witness a physiological birth". 

Empowered birth means feeling respected, validated and heard. It comes in many forms. It's not just for "natural birth" Even unplanned cesarean birth can be empowering. 

It is my deepest wish that every woman feels like she is heard, validated and respected during birth - no matter how or where it happens. We will always remember how we were treated in such a vulnerable time. It has a lasting impact on how we see ourselves and our bodies.

Were you or are you deeply afraid of giving birth? Were you or are you deeply afraid of giving birth? 

I'll never forget going to a baby shower when I was in my 20s, before I had kids. All the older ladies were sitting around telling their birth horror stories, seemingly trying to outdo each other. It felt like a sport. 

The mom-to-be was horrified, and I remember her leaving the room. 

Hollywood often shows birth in a similar light. These are all images that pop up if you Google image search "woman giving birth." 

This post is meant as a prompt to ask yourself how (if at all) you have been impacted by societal messages around birth. 

A student came up to me after my in person Toronto class today and shared that she had a pathological fear of birth before doing the push prep course. It really got me thinking.

You're not broken. You're not old. You're not "too far gone." As you live and breathe, every day is a chance to make friends with your body. Not because you want to "change" her. But because she deserves your love, attention and respect. 

After IVF, heart surgery, uterine surgery, and prolapse, I've had moments of feeling like she's broken. 

But I always came back to movement. Movement is the bridge back to feeling whole again. I KNOW this to be true.

Soooo many of our common exercises are in the Sagi Soooo many of our common exercises are in the Sagittal plane - basically forward and backward movements like bicep curls, lunges, squats, planks, deadlifts etc. 

These are excellent movements but real life doesn't exist ONLY in this way. Workouts should include ALL planes of motion. Try adding more variety to your program ✨

We've got 3 planes of movement: the frontal, sagittal and transverse planes.

We constantly flow between these different axises in our lives, and should train for that! 

Like rotating to break up a fight in the car seats behind you! 😂 Or lateral shuffling to get those movie seats in the middle. Or twisting and reaching to unload your groceries in the cupboard. Etc etc. 

Add movements that build your proprioception and spatial awareness. You can build more functional muscle, prevent injury in day to day life and improve your workout results. 🔥

It's time to call out some BS friends! 

We know the recommended ranges of weight gain in pregnancy based on BMI and the importance of a balanced diet. We know the importance of being physically active in pregnancy for SO many benefits. Movement in pregnancy is so important. 

But we don't need this sleazy "belly only pregnancy program" garbage preying on the insecurities of vulnerable women. Eff that. 

One out of 20 women is at risk for developing an eating disorder during pregnancy. 

Stop telling women “belly only” is the golden standard of achievement when they are growing a human. 

You purport to support pregnant women, but all you're doing is trying to profit off of their insecurities with tragically sub par knowledge. 

You are doling out questionable exercise and nutrition advice to pregnant women that focuses on appearance during a very vulnerable period of physical, hormonal and mental changes. 

What about focusing on essential nutrients? Pelvic floor function? Improving energy and reducing pain? Preparing mentally & physically for birth? 

It's just so icky.
